Hey Everyone,
I should’ve mentioned this in the last issue almost two weeks ago. I was on vacation last week, so couldn’t write. Sorry about not letting you all know that ahead of time. The next detailed edition will be this Wed. (6/25) evening. But there are also still some things from last edition that are relevant to right now. So you can check that out in my last edition. And here’s what I want to emphasize right now …
VOTE!!!
There’s something incredibly important for all of us to do, especially Bronxites. Vote! Whether you vote for the winner or not, politicians generally pay more attention to neighborhoods in their districts that vote the most. So VOTE Wed. 6/24, anytime from 6 AM to 9 PM. There will be voting for Council members, borough presidents, the city comptroller, public advocate and, of course, mayor.
If you’re registered to vote as a Democrat in New York City, you can vote tomorrow (or today if you’re reading this on Tuesday, June 24) in the Democratic mayoral primary for up to 5 candidates, under our ranked choice voting system If you need to learn more about this, go here. There’s only one Republican mayoral candidate — Curtis Sliwa — so there won’t be a Republican primary for mayor.
Even if you have just one favorite candidate for mayor, it’s important to pick at least a few more that you’d be satisfied with. Why? Basically because your single choice may not end up be one of the two remaining candidates.
I’m voting for progressives who care about kids and schools; the worsening housing crisis; public transit; homelessness; and many more issues that care for the working class and poor; and also funding for nonprofit art orgs that Trump and team are actively cancelling.
I’m not voting for Andrew Cuomo who is almost entirely supported by corporate big shots and real estate executives, and who supported the IDC that basically took away power from Democratic majority in the state legislature and basically handed it over to Republicans. And then there are the several sexual harassment accusations, and the state attorney general’s report on that, that forced him to step down as governor! So, with all of the above in mind, here’s who I’m voting for, with links to their websites.
Comptroller Brad Lander
Assemblyman Zohran Mamdani
State Senator Zellnor Myrie
Council speaker Adrienne Adams
Former comptroller Scott Stringer
OK, everyone, thanks for reading — and voting! — and I’ll give you a lot of art happenings to check out on Wednesday.
Peace!
Jordan
Go Zohran. I am good with Lander as well. I am also fine with you expressing your political views:)
I subscribe for art info. I am uninterested in your politics. Your newsletter is not entitled "Art and my personal political screeds and broadsides." If it was- I would never have signed up.
