I’ve been taking photos of Hubert Lewis on-and-off for more than six years at his usual post on Broadway, just south of West 231st Street. His laughter and great taste in fashion always draws me, and others, over to chat. Yesterday, I was headed to the Kingsbridge Library and found him hanging out right in front. We had a nice talk about a bit of both of our lives, including his 11 kids, all adults, and he showed me a photo of the whole crew.
As I mentioned in the last newsletter, I am in a group exhibit at the Blue Door Art Center, entitled “Zappatos,” which, as many of you know, is the Spanish word for shoes. About 5 years ago, in my artwork, I began using cardboard shoe inserts that come with new shoes. So it was a good match-up for the theme of this show. Here’s a current photo by gallery director Michele Amaro, of me and the piece I did in 2018 at the Art Students League in the mixed media class I attended for almost four years with a terrific instructor, Deborah Winiarski.
Here’s some of what’s going on all around us:
If you’re a Bronx artist of any kind — visual arts, media arts, performing arts, or literary arts — you can apply for a BRIO (Bronx Recognizes Its Own) award of $5,000 via the Bronx Council on the Arts. If you’re interested and want advice in applying, you can sign up for an online information session.
Tomorrow, Thursday 10/26, there will be an evening of poetry at 505BX at 505 W. 236th St. in Riverdale, led by Kappock Street Poets.
Have you ever been to the Bronx Documentary Center in the South Bronx neighborhood of Melrose? Well, this Friday, Nov. 3, is a talk with photographer Michael McCoy about his Veterans Day Project. I find the talks and exhibits at BDC incredibly engaging and, well, stunning. Grateful it’s in our borough. There is also a very cool exhibit by Sylvia Plath, the former Village Voice photographer, at BDC through Nov. 5.
This Saturday afternoon, 10/28, 1 to 3 p.m. it’s Family Day at the Bronx Museum of the Arts, where kids can do art. It’s free and costumes are encouraged.
I’ve heard great things about “Michael Richards: Are You Down?” also at the Bronx Museum of the Arts. I’m planning to check it out next week. There is no charge for any visit to the Bronx Museum!
“Frame the Family Gaze”, an exhibit of many women artists, is open through Jan. 20 at Lehman College.
Bronx Art Space has an exhibit of several artists in a show called “Ancestral Foods: Family Feasts.” It runs through 11/18, with a closing reception that evening 6 to 8 p.m.
Through Nov. 3, Longwood Art Gallery at Hostos Community College features Camino a Mictlan (Road to Mictlan). “Through authentic altars, grand sculptures, and mesmerizing masks, the exhibition provides an opportunity to celebrate the art of remembering those who have gone before us.”
Have a great week and weekend everyone! Whatever you experience art/creativity-wise that you enjoy, please share. Thanks! And if you’re interested in seeing more of my art and photography, you can see some on Instagram @jordanmossbx.
