Creative August Fun in Bronx and Beyond

Free Summer Events and more ...

Well, I’ll start with this, since it’s a major event I just learned about that’s happening tomorrow night: Native Bronxite and hip-hop icon Grandmaster Flash will be performing in Crotona Park tomorrow, Friday, Aug. 4 from 4 to 9 p.m. All info here.

The Bronx Art Space, founded in 2010, might not yet be the most well-known art entity in the city’s only mainland borough, but they’ve got got great events and classes going on, especially this summer, in what it calls “Liberation Summer,” including hip-hop classes, workshops and events. Check them out!

See a trend here? Well, it’s the 50th anniversary of hip-hop this month at the same time that a Universal Hip-Hop Museum is being created in the Bronx!

If you’re an artist and want to take part in a group show of smaller-size work you can apply to this one at Blue Door Art Center in downtown Yonkers by Aug. 15. I’ve been in 3 Blue Door shows and I love the positive vibe everyone collectively creates. The current show that I — and many others — have a piece in is open until Aug. 19.

I already shared info for this exhibit at Bronx Museum of the Arts in my last newsletter, but once again, if you’re into art and live in the Bronx or its vicinity, don’t miss this Darrel Ellis exhibit, which ends on Sept. 10.

If you’re not sure whether to dance or swim for fun this weekend … well, you can do both, in virtually the same place. There will be free Salsa Sundays in the Orchard Beach parking lot through Labor Day weekend from noon to 5 p.m.

And if you’re up for venturing to free outdoor creative fun beyond the Boogiedown, there are a lot of free performances going on in parks throughout the city.
